Description
Brunia laevis, the silver brunia or vaalstompie in Afrikaans, grows into a rounded shrub of about 1 m tall. The leaves are small, oblong, densely overlapping and curving in towards the stems, creating neatly arranged grey-green cylinders covered in geometric patterns. The leaves have tiny hairs on the upper surfaces. The spherical flowerheads arranged in loose clusters are about 1,5 cm in diameter with long yellow stamens that leave smooth ash-grey and dark-spotted globules once they drop off (www.fernkloof.com; Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005).
