Description
Serruria elongata, the long stalked spiderhead, is an erect shrub with hairless leaves divided into many needle-like leaflets arranged in whorls close to the ground. The sturdy flower stem of over 30 cm tall presents clusters of flower-heads starting off as flat-topped silvery buds that open into the complex flower-heads that earned them the name spiderheads.
It flowers from July to October in its natural habitat, the mountains of Du Toit’s Kloof, Riviersonderend and Bredasdorp. This picture was taken in Fernkloof, Hermanus (Bean & Johns).
