Description
Serruria elongata is listed as near threatened on the Red Data List. Fires, human development that encroaches on the receding wildlife habitat domains and poor people behaviour patterns usually count among the main reasons why plants and animals make these ominous diversity destroying count-down lists.
The South African endemic Serruria genus is one of the special member groupings within the Western Cape Proteaceae and fynbos treasures, composed of about 50 delightful species. Their leaves are typically divided into thin cylindrical segments with the flower-heads sometimes embedded among the leaves at the top of the shrub, in other species, like this one the flowers are pushed out on top of long flower stalks or in yet other species they even lie down on the ground next to the leaves.
